Chennai : Five bodies, believed to be of missing woodcutters from Tamil Nadu, have been recovered from a lake on the Kadapa-Tirupati highway in  Andhra Pradesh.

Villagers claimed that they had spotted seven bodies in the waterbody, while police only managed to pull out only five. Few belongings, suspected to be of the dead men, have also been recovered from near the lake.

The Andhra Pradesh Police has shifted the dead bodies to the government hospital in Kadapa for postmortem. The cops are now making efforts to get the real identities of them.

“The bodies are in a highly decomposed state. They would have drowned between 48 and 70 hours ago. There are no external injuries. We are in the process of establishing their identity,” Kadapa superintendent of police Babujee Attada told TOI.

The incident was reported by some locals who were passing by the lake for some rituals and spotted the floating bodies. “We received information around noon about bodies floating in the Vonimitta tank. We found clothes and searchlights in the backpacks and nothing else,” said inspector of police of Vonimitta station Ravi.
