Flight arrivals in Chennai suspended till evening amid heavy rains
Chennai : Chennai airport has suspended all flight arrivals till evening 6 PM today amid heavy rainfall that has claimed at least 14 lives till the time this report was being published. "The decision has been taken into consideration for the safety of the travellers," said the airport.
With continuous rains in past few day, Chennai has recorded more than 50 per cent excess rainfall (as compared to historical average) for the monsoon season starting October 1.
During this period rainfall across the state was 38 cm, which is 51 per cent above normal. Chennai has received a staggering 61 cm of rain in the same period, against a historical average of 41 cm.
With a depression moving towards southwest of Bay of Bengal, more rains are predicted in Chennai in coming days. At 8.30 am it was 130 km east-southeast of Chennai and 150 km east-northeast of Puducherry. It is expected to move west-northwest and cross the northern Tamil Nadu coast sometime this evening, the weather department has said.
Yesterday, a red alert was sounded in 20 districts including Chennai due to possible storm.
