Lucknow : Coronavirus vaccine will be provided free of cost to all people above 18 years in Uttar Pradesh, said CM Yogi Adityanath. The decision has been taken after a Cabinet meeting on late Tuesday.

CM Yogi Adityanath, who tested positive last week, chaired meeting with top officials of the state.

Meanwhile, weekend lockdown has also been announced in the state from Friday 8pm to Monday 7am. A night curfew will also be imposed barring all movement other than essential service providers.

"... in the meeting of the Council of Ministers today it has been decided that coronavirus vaccination of all the people above 18 years of age in Uttar Pradesh will be made free... Coronavirus will lose, India will win," Adityanath tweeted.



The health department has been asked to stay prepared for all therequirements during the situation in the state, which is a home to over 20 crore people.

"We have to increase vaccination centres and create a database of the target age-group," the Chief Minister was quoted by news agency PTI.

A similar order has also been announced in Assam. Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted: "Assam will give FREE vaccines to everyone from 18-45 years..." 



On Sunday, the Centre announced that all people above 18 years will be eligible to get the vaccine from May 1 onwards.

On Monday the centre, criticised for delaying younger people access to the vaccine, said all those over the age of 18 can get the shot from May 1.

Currently only people over 45 are eligible.
