Gimmick or Gift: LPG price cut is the talk of the town on Rakshabandhan 2023

New Delhi : On the occassion of Rakshabandhan, the Centre has announced a price cut of Rs 200 on all domestic LPG cylinders, applicable from today. While the leaders from NDA have termed it as a gift from Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the Opposition (INDIA) has called it a gimmick to fetch votes ahead of the upcoming elections.

It must be noted that the reduction in LPG prices is above an extra subsidy of Rs 200 under the Ujjwala scheme on domestic cylinders.

West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamta Banerjee wrote on X, "Till now, only TWO meetings have been held in the past TWO months by the INDIA alliance and today, we see that LPG prices have gone down by ₹200. This is the impact of the INDIA alliance."

Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Shri Tejashvi Yadav, termed it as the decision taken under the pressure of opposition. "This is the pressure...After the second meeting, they have reduced the prices by ₹200...When everything is finalised, then you will see the strength (of the alliance)," he said.

NCP leader Ms Supriya Sule tagged it as another joomla from the PM. "This is 'jumla' government. What will happen by decreasing ₹200? Which sister will benefit from it? When our government was in power, the prices were ₹400 per cylinder. Today, it is ₹1150. They should have decreased the prices by ₹500 or ₹700," she said.
