New Delhi : Amid reports claiming that the government is planning to launch a new Rs 1000 currency note soon, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das cleared the air and claimed there are no such plans.

"(There are) No plans to introduce Rs 1,000 notes. Focus is on production and supply of Rs 500 and lower denomination notes," Das tweeted.



A news report by Indian Express had quoted a senior RBI official as saying that the government is launching a new Rs 1000 note, however, the launch date is not clear.

Mr Das cleared that currently, the government is focusing on increasing the supply of small currency denominations than launching a new one.

On November 8, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced scrapping of old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency note to battle black money menace and corruption, the government had introduced new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 notes with higher security features.
