India registers over 77k new coronavirus cases in one day

New Delhi : The number of coronavirus cases are showing sudden spike in India as the country registered more than 77,000 new cases in last 24 hours, said official data from health ministry.

The total number of positive coronavirus cases in the nation has reached to 33,87,500. With over one thousand deaths in the same time interval, the total number of fatalities stands at 61,529. 25,83,948 patients have recovered from the infection in the country, taking the recovery rate to 76.27 per cent.

India is currently the third worst hit country from the infection in the world. Only the US and Brazil are ahead.

Talking about states, Maharashtra remains the worst-hit and added 14,857 fresh cases of coronavirus infection, taking the case tally in the state to 7,33,568. Maharashttra is followed by Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

"In the past five months, more than 3/4 of cases have recovered and less than 1/4 are active now. Effective implementation of the Centre''s strategic and graded TEST-TRACK-TREAT approach has led to higher recoveries and lower fatality," the Union Health Ministry tweeted.

The coronavirus pandemic has killed over 8.31 lakh people globally since it emerged in China late last year. Over 2.44 crore people have been infected with the novel coronavirus.
