New Delhi : India has registered around 2 million new coronavirus cases in the August month, setting a global record of registering maximum number of cases by any country in a month since the pandemic started in December last year.

The country also registered a surge in the death rate as 28,859 fatalities were reported in the month of August only.

19,87,705 new coronavirus cases were registered in India in the month of August. This is even more than the US which had registered its maximum number of cases in July (19,04,462).

However, if we talk about fatalities, Brazil and US have higher number of deaths. The US had recorded nearly 31,000 deaths till August 30 while Brazil had registered 29,565 fatalities.

The maximum surge in the new cases has been registered in the month of August. Around 54% of cases came in this month. The sudden increase is due to the unlock process implemented in the country where major services has been resumed.

The virus has so far claimed 65,373 lives in India, the third highest in the world following the US (1.87 lakh) and Brazil (1.2 lakh).
