Kanwar Yatra begins: All you need to know about new rules

Noida : On first Monday of Saawan (Shravan), Kanwar Yatra began with full fervour. With traffic restrictions imposed at several places in Uttar Pradesh, this year some new rules have been made to make Yatra peaceful.

As per a decision taken earlier this month, the devotees will not be allowed to carry DJs, hockey sticks and tridents bigger than six inches.

Uttarakhand Director General of Police MA Ganpati had said that efforts were on to ensure safety for pilgrims during the event.

According to an IANS report, kanwarias or devotees who carry pitchers of Ganga water won’t be allowed to go beyond the Neelkanth Mahadev temple in Rishikesh. The police officials have also been asked to frisk people in large gatherings reportedly.

All meat shops enroute to Kanwar yatra have been ordered to remain shut; a restriction on other eateries has also been imposed where they will not be allowed to display non-veg dishes during the course.

District Magistrate Nidhi Kesarwani has ordered that all the meat shops in the district will remain closed till the ‘Maha Shivratri’ celebrations.

During the Kanwar Yatra, the kanwarias walk to the Ganges from their states and return home carrying the Ganga water in bottles. This water is used to worship at their local Shiva temples.
