New Delhi : Maharashtra has reported more than 36,000 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, its highest surge in one day since the beginning of the pandemic. 111 people have lost their lives in the same time interval. India's financial capital Mumbai has also logged in 5,000 cases in a single day.

Maharashtra had logged 31,855 new cases a day before while Mumbai reported 5,185.

The authorities in India have asked people to stay indoors as the second wave of coronavirus can be observed in many parts of the nation. India reported more than 53,000 cases in last 24 hours.

More than half the new infections were reported from Maharashtra, home to financial capital Mumbai, where people had returned to the offices and were allowed to use public transports like local trains.

The local government imposed a full lockdown for ten days in the worst-affected towns Nanded and Beed following a cabinet meeting, an official said.

"It was suggested to allow local administration to impose localized lockdowns instead of imposing lockdown across the state," NDTV quoted a senior government official who declined to be named, referring to comments made during the meeting.
