Mumbai : Maharashtra's former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate after he was questioned in his office for more than 12 hours in Mumbai over an alleged connection with a money laundering case.

Mr Deshmukh had stepped down from his post earlier this year after he was posted with bribery allegations. He had recently appealed in Bombay High Court to cancel the summons by probe agencies and his request was turned down by the court.

Releasing a video statement on Monday, the 71-year-old NCP leader had said: "All allegations against me are false."

He is accused of corruption and extortion by Mumbai's ex top cop Param Bir Singh.

Ex-police officer Param Bir Singh had written a letter to CM Uddhav Thackeray alleging that he was Anil Deshmukh was extorting up to Rs 100 crore every month. The letter was sent days after his removal from the post over tardy progress in the Mukesh Ambani bomb scare matter under his watch.

Anil Deshmukh has rubbished the allegations and threatened a defamation case over the bribery claims, the allegations triggered a huge political storm in the state amid calls for his resignation by the opposition leaders.

It must be noted that the top cop is also missing these days. Anil Deshmukh on Monday slammed the former top cop: "Where is Param Bir Singh, who made allegations against me? Today the officers of Param Bir Singh's own department and several businessmen have filed their complaints against him."
