Manipur session court orders Irom Sharmila’s release
- An Imphal session court on Tuesday ordered release of Irom Sharmila
- The order came after court accepted her plea that she was not committing suicide
- Sharmila has been protesting for past 13 years now
- She is fasting for a demand of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA)
- AFSPA will give sweeping powers to armed forces in disturbed areas
- She had plead the session court on June 4 to set her free
- Sharmila was charged under IPC section 309 (attempt to commit suicide)
- Irom is currently being forced-fed through her nose in the security ward of the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences
- “Since the petitioner is not refusing force-feeding, it cannot be said she is fasting unto death,” said the judge
- Over 16000 people are in support of her campaign.
