Why Navjot Singh Sidhu is in jail?
In December 1988, Navjot Singh Sidhu and one of his friends were involved in a road rage case in Patiala. They had apparently beaten-up Gurnam Singh over a parking dispute. Mr Singh was badly injured and was declared dead when taken to the hospital. An FIR was filed against Navjot Singh Sidhu by one of Gurnam Singh's family members.
The matter was heard in High Court and Navjot Singh Sidhu was fined Rs 1000 for hitting Gurnam Singh. Later, the family filed a fresh appeal and said that the fine is not enough compensation. In September 2018, the family reappealed to extend the punishment. On March 25, 2022, the Supreme Court awarded Mr Sidhu one year of jail term as an extension in punishment.
