Mumbai : An ex-Navy officer was beaten in Mumbai by Maharashtra's Shiv Sena activists allegedly for sharing cartoon of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

In the images shared on social media, Madan Sharma was seen with wounds on face and a bloodshot in the eye. The 65-year-old was allegedly attacked near his home in Kandivalli East, Mumbai.

Mumbai Police has registered a FIR in the case.

According to Madan Sharma, he had shared a cartoon of Uddhav Thackeray in his society's WhatsApp group. He later received a call from one Kamlesh Kadam, who asked his name and address. In the afternoon, he was called outside his residence where goons attacked him and left him with wounds.

The security camera footage outside the building shows how he was thrashed by a group of men. In the video, men can be seen dragging the victim man by his shirt and punching him.

Several BJP leaders, including former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, posted a photo of an injured Madan Sharma.

"Extremely sad and shocking incident. Retired Naval Officer got beaten up by goons because of just a WhatsApp forward. Please stop this GundaRaj Uddhav Thackeray ji. We demand strong action and punishment to these goons (sic)," Mr Fadnavis tweeted.

Five people, including Kamlesh Kadam, have been arrested in the case so far.
