On Coronavirus cases tally, India leaves Russia behind to take third spot

New Delhi : The number of new cases is continuously rising in India and they are growing so fast that the nation has now reached on the third spot, leaving Russia behind in count of coronavirus cases registered till date. The country logged more than 6.9 lakh cases on Sunday evening, according to data from state governments. Now, only Brazil and the US are ahead of India on the tally.

India added a record number of coronavirus cases on Sunday. In its daily morning update, the health ministry reported just under 25,000 cases and 613 deaths in 24 hours -- the biggest daily spike since the first case was detected in late January.

Maharashtra, the worst-hit state and home to the densely packed financial hub Mumbai, recorded over 7,000 new cases while Tamil Nadu and Delhi recorded more than 4,200 and 2,500 fresh cases respectively.

India is currently under the unlock 2 phase in which several economic activities have been allowed. Schools, metro trains in cities, cinemas, gyms and swimming pools are still closed.

Authorities have made wearing masks mandatory in public places, while large gatherings are banned and shops and other public establishments are required to implement social distancing.

Meanwhile, India is also putting its hope on the quick finding of coronavirus vaccine, anticipated by August 15 when India's Independence Day will be celebrated.
