Operation Kaveri: 670 Indians evacuated from Sudan so far
New Delhi : India has successfully evacuated 670 of its citizens from Sudan and is actively considering further rescue operations to bring more individuals back home from the conflict-ridden African nation before the ceasefire concludes between the regular army and a paramilitary force.
On Wednesday, a C-130J military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force carried 392 Indians from Port Sudan to Jeddah in three separate flights. This operation came just a day after an Indian Navy ship rescued 278 Indian citizens from Sudan.
The current tally of Indians evacuated from Sudan stands at 670, as per the provided official data.
On Wednesday night, the initial group of evacuees was transported to New Delhi from Jeddah via a commercial aircraft.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his joy on Twitter, stating, "India welcomes back its own. #OperationKaveri brings 360 Indian Nationals to the homeland as first flight reaches New Delhi."
As part of the evacuation initiative called 'Operation Kaveri', India is facilitating the repatriation of the evacuees from Sudan to Jeddah, a city in Saudi Arabia, from where they are then returning to their home country.
Late Wednesday night, Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the External Affairs Ministry, tweeted,"#OperationKaveri continues. 4th batch of stranded Indians departs from Port Sudan for Jeddah. IAF C-130J takes off with 136 passengers on board."
