Over 40 lakh teens get first shot of COVID vaccine on first day
New Delhi : More than 40 lakh teens in the age group of 15-18 years took the first dose of coronavirus vaccines on the first day of the vaccination in India.
Meanwhile, coronavirus cases in the nation continued to soar in the metro cities; Delhi recorded around 1000 more cases than the previous day. The positivity rate in the national capital was at 6%.
Around 7.4 crore students fall under the age group of 15-18 and 40 lakh students have been vaccinated on the first day.
Parents of many students said that they were eagerly waiting for the day and with the vaccination they have gained a sense of relief, specially when the coronavirus cases are rising due to the presence of new variant Omicron.
Currently, teens are only allowed to take Bharat Biotech's Covaxin shot.
"Today we have taken an important step forward in protecting our youth against COVID-19. Congrats to all my young friends between the age group of 15-18 who got vaccinated. Congrats to their parents as well. I would urge more youngsters to get vaccinated in the coming days!" PM Modi wrote on Twitter.
