New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid tribute to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his 128th birth anniversary.  

"Tributes to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on his birth anniversary," the prime minister tweeted. 

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and former President Pranab Mukherjee paid a visit to Pandit Nehru's memorial Shantivan in New Delhi.

Pandit Nehru was sworn-in on August 15, 1947 as the first prime minister of India when the nation gained independence from the British.

He was born on November 14, 1889 in Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad and died on May 27, 1964.

The nation also celebrates Children's Day on the birth anniversary of India's first Prime Minister.
