New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi was bestowed with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, the highest honor of France, during his two-day visit to the country. French President Emmanuel Macron presented the prestigious award to Prime Minister Modi on Friday at the Elysee Palace in Paris.

Upon his arrival in Paris on Thursday, Prime Minister Modi received a red-carpet welcome, setting the stage for his participation as the chief guest in the French National Day celebrations. Today, he will attend the event alongside President Macron, further strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two nations.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the conferment of France's highest honor took place at the Elysee Palace. MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi shared the news on Twitter, stating, "A warm gesture embodying the spirit of partnership. PM Modi conferred with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, the highest award in France, by the President." 

Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to President Macron on behalf of the people of India for this exceptional honor. The recognition highlights the strong bond between the two nations and acknowledges India's significant contributions.

Earlier in the visit, President Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron hosted a private dinner at the Elysee Palace in honor of Prime Minister Modi. The event provided an opportunity for the leaders to engage in bilateral discussions and further enhance cooperation.

During his stay, Prime Minister Modi addressed the Indian diaspora in France, delivering a significant announcement regarding the use of India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) in France. The gathering, held at La Seine Musicale, a renowned performing arts center on an island in the Seine River, drew a large crowd eager to hear the Prime Minister's address.

In his speech, Prime Minister Modi emphasized India's rapid development and evolving role in the changing global order. He highlighted the dynamic strength of India and its ability to adapt to the new world landscape.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Modi unveiled plans to establish a new Indian consulate in Marseille, France. This development aims to facilitate Indian students pursuing masters' degrees in France, who will now be eligible for five-year-long post-study work visas, enhancing opportunities for education and employment.

As France celebrates its national day, Prime Minister Modi acknowledged the 25th anniversary of the strategic partnership between India and France. The occasion emphasizes the strong and enduring ties between the two countries.
