New Delhi : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated world's largest office building - Surat Diamond Bourse – which has now overtaken Pentagon.

The building is spread over a built-up space of 6.7 million square feet, finalized in July with an expenditure of ₹ 32 billion. The American landmark, inaugurated in 1943, occupies a space of 6.5 million square feet.

The exchange includes a state-of-the-art 'Customs Clearance House' for Import-Export, a retail jewelry mall catering to jewelry businesses, and a facility for international banking along with secure vaults.

While Mumbai has traditionally served as the primary hub for diamond exports in India, Surat, renowned as the "Diamond City," takes the lead in the processing of these precious gems. Approximately 90% of the world's rough diamonds undergo cutting and polishing in Surat before being distributed to buyers in destinations such as the US and China. The new bourse is designed to streamline the industry by bringing it together under one roof.

Situated within the Diamond Research and Mercantile City, a business district modeled after Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (Gift City), another flagship project of Prime Minister Modi, the new complex comprises nine 15-story towers with around 4,700 offices. Currently, about 130 offices are already in use, as reported by Nagjibhai Sakariya, the president of the Surat Diamond Bourse.
