President's rule can be withdrawn if a party proves numbers: MHA

Mumbai : Minutes after the President's rule was imposed in Maharashtra, Ministry of Home Affairs released a statement that it can be withdrawn if any party proves the majority to form the government.

Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday evening approved Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari's proposal to impose President's rule with all invited parties failing to prove majority to form the government.

Shiv Sena, on the other hand, has moved to the Supreme Court against Maharashtra Governor for not granting an extension of three days to the party to get letters of support from NCP and Congress.

On Monday, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari had called the NCP to form the government. The President's rule was imposed three hours before the deadline.

Congress slammed the decision and said that President must had waited till the deadline he had given before taking such a call.

“Imposition of President Rule in Maharashtra was decided long ago.But Hon Governer should have waited till 8.30 tonight before sending report to Centre. Bcoz he only had fixed this deadline with NCP as last option to form govt. Prima facie it looks illegal & unconstitutional now,” says Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam in a tweet.
