Press freedom under threat: senior journalist Rakesh Kumar applauds Press Club’s bold stand for attacked journalists in MP

New Delhi : Following the Delhi High Court's recent order granting police protection to Amarkant Singh Chouhan, Bhind Bureau Chief of Swaraj Express, senior journalist Rakesh Kumar has come forward to commend the Press Club of India for its timely intervention and unwavering support for journalists facing intimidation and violence in Madhya Pradesh.
Rakesh Kumar, a respected figure in Indian journalism with over three decades of experience, expressed serious concern over the increasing pattern of harassment against reporters who expose uncomfortable truths. “The role of the Press Club has been instrumental in bringing national attention to these grave incidents. Their prompt support to Chouhan and others under threat reinforces the idea that the journalist community will not stay silent in the face of injustice,” he said.
Rakesh Kumar added, “What is happening in Madhya Pradesh is deeply worrying. Summoning journalists, beating them, stripping them, and forcing them to record false statements is not law enforcement—it’s a blatant abuse of power. In such a hostile atmosphere, the support offered by the Press Club has not only provided moral strength to these journalists but has also reminded us that press solidarity is our strongest shield.”
The Delhi High Court’s intervention comes after Chouhan fled Madhya Pradesh, fearing for his life due to his coverage of illegal sand mining and alleged police complicity. Several other journalists—including Dharmendra Ojha (News 24), Shashikant Goyal (Bejod Ratna), and Pritam Singh (NTV Bharat)—have faced similar intimidation, often involving physical assault and forced retractions.
Rakesh Kumar called upon the journalistic fraternity to remain united and vigilant: “We must demand accountability and push for institutional safeguards like a comprehensive Journalist Protection Law. It is not just about one reporter or one region—this is about protecting the very foundation of democracy.”
He further urged media organizations, civil society, and constitutional bodies to closely monitor developments in Madhya Pradesh and ensure that those misusing their authority are held responsible.
