New Delhi : As Delhi government organised 'Shaheed Utsav' to remember the sacrifices and struggle of Indian freedom fighters, we decided to discuss about shaheed Bhagat Singh on his 109th birth anniversary. Bhagat Singh always talked about equality, importance of education, languages and complete freedom. He wrote for, and edited, Urdu and Punjabi newspapers, published in Amritsar, and also contributed to low-priced pamphlets. Some of his pseudonyms were Balwant, Ranjit and Vidhrohi. He was the person to popularise the phrase “Inquilab Zindabad” (long live revolution) during the late 1920s, through his speeches and writings. His popular works including ‘Why I am an Atheist’, ‘Letter to Young Political Workers’, and Jail Notebook.

Who was hanged on 14th February

Bhagat Singh who fought for the country's Independence from British rule and was hanged by them in Lahore jail at the age of 23 alongside his companions Shivaram Hari Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar on March 23, 1931. He was hanged for his part in the Lahore conspiracy case. He had assassinated a British police officer John Saunders to avenge the death of freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai who had succumbed to his injuries which were inflicted by the British police.
