Tamil Nadu moves to SC after HC allows only online liquor sale

New Delhi : Tamil Nadu reached out Supreme Court against the Madras High Court on Friday that liquor can be sold only via online medium. The order came after huge crowds were seen gathering outside the liquor shops, crushing the social distancing measures in order to buy some alcohol.

Liquor shops were opened on Monday after 40 days of lockdown since March 24. 

On Friday, while hearing a petition besides a complaint by actor-politician Kamal Haasan's Makkal Needhi Maiam or MNM, the high court observed that there were huge crowds before the shops and no social distancing was maintained.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Friday suggested the states to opt for home delivery of liquor to avoid rush and maintain social distancing.
