New Delhi : As announced by PM Narendra Modi in the recent address to the nation, children aged between 15 and 18 can register for COVID-19 vaccines on the CoWIN app from January 1 using their school ID cards.

CoWIN chief Dr RS Sharma told news agency ANI that an additional slot has been created on the online platform for students to register for the vaccination.

In a public address on Christmas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that children in the 15-18 age group could get their first round of Covid vaccines from January 3.

Precautionary shots for frontline and healthcare workers, as well as those over 60, were also announced.

Children in India will be vaccinated with one of two shots - either Bharat Biotech's double-dose Covaxin or Zydus Cadila's three-dose ZyCoV-D, both of which have been cleared for kids over 12.

The decision to start vaccination of frontline workers and children come at a time when number of coronavirus cases in India have started to increase at an alarming rate.

India's total tally of Omicron’s confirmed cases stand at 535.
