Heavy rains in Telangana kill 5, crop loss over Rs 100 crore

Hyderabad : Strong winds, heavy rains threw life out of gear in Telangana. At least five people have been reported dead and a crop loss of over Rs 100 crores in the destruction.

A man died after a portion of house collapsed, while others have been reported dead in rain-related incidents. Roads were blocked with unearthed trees, power cuts and flooded streets added to the misery.

People though were happy to find some respite from the scorching heat, but the downpour was a nightmare for the farmers who are facing a total crop loss of over Rs 100 crore.

This is the third time in summers when farmers are facing such a destruction due to unseasonal rains. Mango crop has remained to be the worst hit. Hundreds of acres of vegetable crops, particularly leafy vegetables, were inundated by heavy rains accompanied by hailstones.

Heavy rain lashed Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem districts on Thursday morning causing severe damage to crop. By evening, the rains spread across Warangal-Urban, Warangal-Rural, Karimnagar, Yadadri, Mancherial, Nalgonda, Bhupalapalli, Suryapet, Medchal, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Medak and Siddipet districts. A few tin sheets of Warangal railway station were blown away by strong wind.
