Tamil Nadu honour killing: Six sentenced to death for killing Shankar

Chennai : A Tamil Nadu Court on Tuesday sentenced six accused to death for murdering Shankar in a case of honour killing.

Out of six accused, one is the father of the girl, S. Kausalya, whose husband Shankar was murdered in 2016.

The court has also acquitted the girl's mother and two others. The court also sentenced five people to life imprisonment.

Shankar and Kausalya were attacked in March 2016 in Udumalpet, around 540 km from here, after their inter-caste marriage.

The court found out that the couple was attacked on the orders of the father, who was against the intercast marriage of Kausalya.

The Tamil Nadu Police had charge-sheeted 11 persons in the case.

Shankar and his wife, Kausalya, were brutally attacked by three persons in full public view near a bus stand in Udumalpet on March 13, 2016

While Shankar died on way to hospital, Kausalya, who hails from Dindigul district, survived with head injuries. A video footage of the chilling attack had gone viral triggering public outrage in the State.
