Trees fall as dust storm engulf Delhi-NCR region

New Delhi : A high-intensity dust storm engulfed Delhi-NCR region on Monday night, leaving trees unearthed at several locations.

Authorities in Delhi-NCR issued advisory and precautionary measures to ensure no life loss.

According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) thunderstorm accompanied with light rain and gusty winds would occur in Delhi and adjoining NCR including Rohtak, Bhiwani, Jhajjar Gurugram, Bagpat, Meerut and Ghaziabad during next two to three hours.

Following the alert, Delhi Government and Delhi Police has issued advisory. Residents have been advised to stay inside as much as possible.

All evening schools will remain shut in Delhi, while Haryana has already announced 2-day holiday for schools. Ghaziabad has also declared 1-day holiday in schools on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, the IMD issued a mild thunderstorm and dust storm warning for the next 48 hours in New Delhi and its neighbouring states.

"Till tomorrow there's a possibility of a dust storm and thunderstorm in Delhi," IMD official, Devendra Pradhan told ANI. 

A total of 124 people have lost their lives so far in the thuderstorms since last month.
