New Delhi : The wife of Uttar Pradesh man, who had held 23 children hostages, has died of injuries she received after her neighbours attacked her with stones and bricks. The accused man was shot dead by the Uttar Pradesh Police after 10-hour-long stand-off.

After the children were rescued by the police officials, the neighbours caught his wife and assaulted her brutally. Bricks and stones were thrown at her. Due to injuries all over her body she failed to survive and succumbed to her injuries at a hospital.

All 23 children were saved during the police act. However, it is not clear if the woman was also a part of the plan but cops suspect that she may have an involvement.

The accused man was on bail and is believed to be suffering from mental illness.

On Thursday, he invited some children from the village to his house on the pretext of celebrating his one-year-old daughter's birthday.

When the children were all inside, Batham bolted the doors and held everybody at gunpoint.

The parents of children raised alarm when the kids did not return home and no one answered from the man's house.

Police said that when they rushed a PCR van to his house, Subhash Batham began shooting at it from the terrace. He even threw a crude bomb at them.

Commandos of the Anti-Terrorism Squad and a police team led by the Kanpur Zone Inspector General were subsequently deployed at the spot.
