Congress, TMC to boycott GST launch on June 30

New Delhi : The Opposition Party Congress has decided to boycott the much-awaited GST launch scheduled June 30 in a special midnight Parliament session, joining the tunes of Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The TMC had earlier announced that they will not be a part of the GST launch as they feel India is not ready for it.

The TMC chief Mamata Banerjee alleged that the Modi government was "in an unnecessary hurry" to implement the GST which she said requires "at least another six months" so all rules and procedures are notified.

"We are saying the economy is not yet ready to face the GST from the 1st of July, 2017."

Sources said that Trinamool Congress was keen that the Congress also adopt the same course.

They said that the move to roll out GST was initiated during the Congress-led government, so the party had to carefully weigh various factors. 

"We are a bigger party and have to take a decision keeping in mind all factors. Smaller parties have their own considerations," a party leader said. 

According to the sources, while a section of the party feels that the GST is party's brainchild and the party should attend the meeting even though the BJP is seeking to take credit, another section feels that the party should abstain protesting against the way the tax regime is being implemented.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Pranab Mukherjee will be attending the event.
