Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar resigns after losing in polls

Punjab : Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar has resigned from his post after he lost the Lok Sabha Election 2019 from Gurdaspur to Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate Sunny Deol. He sent his resignation from the post to the party president Rahul Gandhi.

In his letter of resignation, he took moral responsibility of the defeat from the seat and party's poor performance in the Congress-ruled state.

In Punjab, Congress has won eight of the 13 seats. The Akali Dal and the BJP won two seats each and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) bagged just one.

In the letter, Sunil Jhakar mentioned that he was unable to retain the seat despite best support from Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and CM Amarinder Singh.

"Everyone supported me fully and put in their best for me but I was unable to defend my seat. In such a scenario I cannot continue as state chief. I feet a moral responsibility to quit," said Jakhar, who lost by over 77,000 votes.

Jakhar, 65, won the October 2017 by-election with a margin of 1.92 lakh votes.
