Amritsar : Putting an end to all speculations, the Congress Punjab chief Captain Amarinder Singh confirmed that cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu will contest in the upcoming Punjab assembly elections as a party nominee.

The former BJP MP will contest from his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu constituency Amritsar (East). Navjot Kaur had been wining the constituency from last two terms. She was the health minister in the Akali-BJP government in Punjab.

Sidhu resigned from the BJP on September 2016, he was Rajya Sabha MP.  There were initial speculations on whether he will join the AAP or the Congress.

But after his wife joined the Congress last month and he too held meetings with Congress leaders, his induction in the party now looks imminent.

There has been confusion over whether Sidhu or his wife will contest the election and Punjab Congress leaders have maintained that that the Amritsar (East) seat has been reserved for the couple and now it is their call.

It was big blow to the BJP in Punjab as the couple were star leaders.
