New Delhi : Yogi Adityanath, star campaigner for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh, has been elected as the Chief Minister for the state. Here are 10 things we must know about him:

1: Yogi Adityanath was born to a Garhwali Rajput family on June 5, 1972 in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttarakhand (formerly in Uttar Pradesh).

2: He has a Bachelor degree in Mathematics from the H.N.B. Garhwal University in Srinagar, Uttarakhand.

3: Adiyanath is a Mahant or head priest of the Gorakhnath Mutt, a Hindu temple in Gorakhpur, following the death of his spiritual "father," Mahant Avaidyanath in September 2014.

4: He had been a Member of Parliament from the Gorakhpur Constituency, Uttar Pradesh for five consecutive terms (in 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014 elections).

5: Yogi Adityanath is the founder of a militant youth wing Hindu Yuva Vahini, which has been known for violent activities in the Purvanchal region in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

6: He has been in several controversies throughout his political career. In 2005, Adityanath led a 'purification drive' which involved the conversion of Christians to Hinduism.

7: He has a difficult relationship with Bharatiya Janata Party, but being a star campaigner, BJP remains silent over the bitter side.

8: There have been several rifts between BJP and Yogi over allotment of tickets.

9: In March 2010, Adityanath was one of several BJP MPs who stated defiance to the party whip on the Women's Reservation Bill.
