Mumbai : An exhibition of handwoven sarees, rendering a contemporary touch to traditional fabrics in terms of their material blends, colours, textures and patterns, concluded at Wankhede Stadiums Bungalow Eight here on Sunday.

Mounted by textiles organisation Akaaro, the two-day exhibition titled "Granular Times" was aimed at "creating a new conversation around a garment that epitomises tradition and heritage".

Exhibiting innovation in saree production, Akaaro has kept all sarees elemental, presenting a new twist to a cultural signifier.

"None of the sarees has any traditional patterns or motifs, nor any borders," organisation's founder Gaurav Jai Gupta told IANS.

"In one series we took up the whole idea of engineered sarees where we mixed cotton wool with silk," he said, adding that the innovative take on sarees is like "staging a modern and contemporary interpretation of a raag".
