Kolkata : West Bengal on Tuesday joined the rest of the nation in celebrating the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with various programmes organised by the government, political parties and civic bodies.

The main programme was held at Gandhi Ghat in Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district where Governor Keshri Nath Tripathi paid floral tribute at the martyrs' column.

Women took part in spinning the yarn. An all-faith prayer service was held and school students read excerpts from Gandhi's writings.

Tripathi also offered flowers at Gandhi's statue. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also saluted Mahatma Gandhi.

In a bid to pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi, an exhibition on his life and contribution towards the nation commenced in the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, also known as Gandhi museum in Barrackpore's Dhobighat area from October 1. It will end on October 5.
