Human Trafficking: Women Commissions rescue victims in Delhi, Goa
New Delhi : In two separate incidents, National Commission for Women (NCW) and Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) on Wednesday rescued girls and women who had become victims of human trafficking.
While DCW rescued 16 Nepali girls who were about to be trafficked to Gulf countries, NCW rescued a woman from Siliguri who was missing for a month after being trafficked to Goa.
A team led by DCW Chairperson Swati Maliwal along with Delhi Police conducted a raid in Delhi's Munirka, rescuing the girls who mostly belong to Sindhupalchok district in Nepal.
According to DCW, the girls were brought to Delhi on the pretext of employment and kept in a small room for several days. The traffickers had taken away their passports.
"The traffickers had been running this racket at this location for the last eight months and several girls had already been sent abroad. The place from where the girls have been rescued is hardly 500 m from the police station," Maliwal said.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also reacted on the incident and questioned Delhi Police's inability to stop human trafficking.
"Where are BJP, LG, Home Minister, Prime Minister? Delhi Police is under them. What are they doing? It was their duty to stop this," he tweeted.
In another case, NCW along with Goa Police rescued the victim after her husband complained to the police in Siliguri. After the complaint was forwarded to NCW, Chairperson Rekha Sharma immediately directed the Goa Police Chief to look into the matter.
On July 23, the NCW was notified by the victim's family that she was accessible over mobile phone and her number was put on surveillance.
"Her location could be traced and the anti-trafficking team reached the location to rescue the woman. She is presently in a shelter home in Goa and will be reunited with her five-month-old child and family in Siliguri," the Commission said.
