New Delhi : A man was arrested in the national capital on Tuesday for killing his daughter by attacking her with an iron rod, police said.

The incident occurred in Sangam Vihar of south Delhi at around 5 a.m on Tuesday allegedly after an altercation between the accused, Nand Kishore, his wife and their two daughters.

"During investigation it was found that Nand Kishore attacked his wife and daughters with the iron rod when they were sleeping in a room. His younger daughter, Kavita, died on the spot, while his wife and elder daughter, Suman, suffered critical head injuries. They have been admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre," said PRO of Delhi Police ACP Anil Mittal.

"The elder son, Rahul, who works as a salesman in a private company, indulged in a fight with his mother on Monday night," Deputy Commissioner of Police Romil Baaniya said.

"After committing the crime, Nand Kishore reached the Sangam Vihar Police Station and informed the duty officer about his crime. The police reached the crime scene and took the injured to hospital. Police later arrested him," Baaniya said.

"During the investigation, police came to know that Nand Kishore has been in depression for last few days and would often confront his children over their coming home late," the officer said.

"Due to his low income, he could not get perfect matches for the marriage of his daughters. Many marriage proposals were turned down earlier because he was not in a position to offer good dowry," Sunil Prasad, a neighbour, told IANS.

"Only family's elder daughter Sushma got married. Two others -- deceased Kavita, 22, and Suman, 24, who received injuries in the attack -- stayed at home. Only Rahul is a helping hand of his father, while two of his siblings -- Mohit and Ravi -- are students of a nearby government school," the officer added.
