Kolkata : A Bangladeshi smuggler was arrested from West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district on Wednesday and gold biscuits worth over Rs 21 lakh were seized from him, a senior BSF officer said.

Acting on a tip off, the Border Security Force (BSF) troopers conducted a special operation near the Petrapole international checkpost and intercepted the suspected smuggler at 11.25 a.m.

"Jaynal Abedin (51) was arrested during the special checking near the Petrapole gate. On thorough search, six gold biscuits worth Rs 21.38 lakh were seized from him," the officer said, adding the gold biscuits were being smuggled in from Bangladesh to India.

"The accused smuggler and the seized gold have been handed over to the Customs Authority in Petrapole for further legal action," he said.

The south Bengal frontier of the BSF has seized over 13 kg of gold worth Rs 4.12 crore and arrested six gold smugglers so far in 2018.
