Alpe d'Huez (France) : Welshman Geraint Thomas (Sky) made history here with his victory in the 12th stage of the Tour de France, becoming the first rider to win on Alpe d'Huez while wearing the leader's yellow jersey and the first Briton ever to prevail in the gruelling climb.

Thomas beat Dutch cyclist Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) to the finish line of the 175.5 km course by two seconds to claim his second consecutive stage win on Thursday.

France's Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale) completed the podium, edging out defending champion Chris Froome (Sky) of Britain.

Thomas extended his lead over Froome in the General Classification to 1 minute, 39 seconds, while Dumoulin remains in third, 1:50 behind the Welsh rider.

Friday's 13th stage will take the riders from Bourg d'Oisans to Valence, a distance of 169.5 km.
