Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Sculpture Artist Saroj Jain, an Icon in the World of Cubism

New Delhi : As a tribute to sculptor Saroj Jain and her contributions to the world of art, a retrospective exhibition of her works of the past 4 decades is being organised at the Shridharani Gallery & Sculpture Court at Triveni Kala Sangam from 26th March to 3rd April, 2023. The exhibition aims at showcasing a wide range of Jain's sculptures, including her most iconic works, to provide an opportunity to experience a unique style of cubism that she created through her very own language in modern sculpture.

85-year-old Saroj Jain passed away on February 2022. Artists from across the nation will gather to pay their tributes to Saroj Jain, who is known for her simple, unpretentious, and spiritual life dedicated to her art and inspired generations of aspiring sculptors to pursue their passions.

"A tireless artist"

"Saroj was an artist of immense talent, who has carved a niche for herself with her language in cubism. I have very good memories of her as a tireless artist who practiced sculptures everyday and never heard about a mood block from her unlike most artists. Her each sculpture is full of aesthetical essence and every composition, thought and idea is unique," said Biman Das (Chairman, AIFACS), who attended the event as the chief guest.

"Committed, passionate and spiritual"

"Saroj Jain, my masi dedicated her life to Art and put all her love into creating a unique language of her own in sculpture. Her family, friends, students and colleagues all remember her as the quiet, simple, committed, passionate, spiritual and loving person, who shared the love in her heart with everyone around her," said Payal Jain, who is a fashion designer by profession and also the organizer of the event.

"A dedicated teacher"

"Throughout her career, Saroj Jain was dedicated to sharing her knowledge and expertise with her students, fostering a new generation of sculptors who are poised to carry on her legacy. And with this thought, we have also started the Saroj Jain Sculpture Awards in three of the most prominent art universities of India this year, namely Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai, Viswa Bharti, Shanti Niketan, and Jamia Milia Islamia, New Delhi," said Kiran Chopra, Curator, Writer & Sculptor.

Born in 1936, Saroj Jain dedicated her life to exploring the endless possibilities of abstract form and composition, pushing the boundaries of sculpture to create pieces that are aesthetically striking and intellectually inspiring. For her work, she had received the Sahitya Kala Parishad and AIFAACS Awards and was the Head of the Sculpture Department at Triveni Kala Sangam for over four decades.

Saroj Jain's works have been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums around the world, and have found pride of place amongst the private collections of the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, and the Delhi College of Art, New Delhi, to name a few. Her artworks have found homes in many private collections around the globe, and her influence can be seen in the work of countless contemporary sculptors.
