New Delhi : Holika Dahan 2019: The colorful Holi is among the major festivals, celebrated with great enthusiasm in India. People believe that it is a celebration of good over evil. This 2019, Holi falls on March 21 and the festive aura starts with the burning of Holika. So, let’s see what exactly is Holika Dahan and why does this ritual hold importance in Hindusim.

In terms of tradition, Holika is lit on the full moon day of Phalgun Mas and the next day is the tradition of playing Holi begins. It is believed that with Holika burning, the feeling of hatres and hate burns alone and the color of love and unity spreads by coloring each other.

Holika Dahan 2019 Shubh Muhurat: According to Hindu calander, this 2019, the auspicious time of Holika Dahan will remain from 9:01 am to midnight 12:20 min. The full moon day begins on March 20 at 10:45 am. 

How to perform Holika puja

Devotees offer pooja with the use of turmeric. They believe that doing so will bring prosperity to the house. They make Rangoli with Abir Gulal around Holika and offer five fruits and sweets in it. They offer water by doing 7 rounds around Holika. 

Holika Dahan Importance

Holika Dahan is associated with mythological legends. The Demon king Hiranyakashyap asked his sister Holika, to take Prahlad in her arms and enter a blazing fire .She had been granted with a boon which had made her immune to fire and so only Prahlad would get burnt to death. But when Holika did that, the Lord protected Prahlad and she got burnt to death as the boon was applicable only when she entered the fire alone.

Holika ash is believed to be very scared for roasting new bullies of wheat and green sugarcane. In some places in North India, there is a tradition of frying wheat flour and sharing it with relatives and friends.

Holika fire also predicts the future. According to Hindu festival calendar it is the last festival of the year. After Holi, the Chaitra Navaratri marks the beginning of new festival calendar.
