Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster in space: All you need to know

New Delhi : Elon Musk's Tesla Roadster is an electric super car that he selected as "something fun and without irreplaceable sentimental value" by launching it into space on the maiden demonstration flight of the Falcon Heavy rocket.

The car was launched in space on February 6, 2018. Both Tesla Roadster and Falcon Heavy rocket have been made by the companies owned by Elon Musk. With the launch it has become the first consumer car sent into the space.

Interestingly, this is the same car which Musk used to travel to office daily in Los Angeles.

The car has been set on a course to reach Mars and write history on wheels. It broadcasted first four hours of its voyage to Earth.

Target of car in space: The car was launched into an elliptical orbit around the Sun that will cross the orbit of Mars and reach a distance of 1.70 AU from the Sun. The trajectory was not designed to intercept Mars, so the car will not fly by Mars nor enter an orbit around Mars.

Future of the car in space: Musk claims that the car is capable of drifting in space for billions of years. However, it may get impacted with some structural damage from solar radiation, cosmic radiation, and micrometeoroid impacts, as well as the possibility of coming into contact with main belt asteroids as its orbit edges into the asteroid belt.
