New Delhi : NASA space agency has found the strange ‘electric blue’ clouds floating 50 miles over the poles. The noctilucent clouds or polar mesospheric clouds and are formed from ice crystals and tiny pieces of meteorites.

NASA has lifted off its balloon up into the air from Esrange, Sweden which captured six million high-resolution images of the ‘brilliant blue rippling clouds that are visible just after the Sun sets in polar regions during the summer’.

From what we’ve seen so far, we expect to have a really spectacular dataset from this mission,’ said Dave Fritts, principal investigator of the mission. ‘Our cameras were likely able to capture some really interesting events and we hope will provide new insights into these complex dynamics.’

Researchers are now studying the data and expecting to discover something exciting and valuable to make weather predictions more accurate in the future.

Experts believe that the mission will also shed light on a strange process which generates ‘atmospheric gravity waves’ caused when air is pushed upwards towards the outer atmosphere.

‘This is the first time we’ve been able to visualize the flow of energy from larger gravity waves to smaller flow instabilities and turbulence in the upper atmosphere,’ Fritts added.
