Players who flopped in IPL but performed well in other leagues
New Delhi : The Indian Premier League (IPL) has long served as a barometer of a player’s potential, talent, and abilities, whether they are Indian or foreign.
Several young Indian players have gone on to play international cricket after participating in the IPL.
The franchises, on the other hand, select just the best or lesser-known overseas players for the IPL.
The teams consider the overseas player’s performance in other T20 tournaments, such as the BBL, CPL, PSL, Blast, and others, while deciding whether to purchase him at auction and include him in the eleven.
While there are some players who have performed best in other league but fails in IPL
Colin Munro
Colin Munro has been a significant success in the short format for New Zealand and the franchises he has represented in various tournaments, but particularly in the IPL.
In the BBL, CPL, PSL, GLT20 Canada, Blast, and Super Smash, he was a sought-after player.
With 7059 runs batted in at an average of 29.65 and a strikeout rate of 143.97, the left-hander has hit 44 hundreds and 44 fifties.
In the IPL, on the other hand, he averages just 14.75 with a strike rate of 125.53 and has the best score of 40, having played for KKR in 2016 and DC in 2018 and 2019.
He couldn’t add more than 13 IPL caps to his collection, as his caps went unsold in the last two auctions.
Daniel Christian
There’s a decent probability Daniel Christian would have played in a cricket league somewhere in the world.
He has been a true traveller, going from one part of the world to the next to demonstrate his abilities; he is also recognised for winning tournaments, with nearly every prize in his trophy cabinet.
Christian, an all-rounder, has appeared in 350 T20s, scoring 5174 runs at 23.62 and taking 259 wickets.
Christian, on the other hand, has struggled in the IPL, where he has played for four different teams since his IPL debut in 2011.
The right-hander has averaged 15.48 with the bat in 43 matches and has taken 34 wickets.
Aaron Finch
Aaron Finch is regarded as one of the best white-ball batsmen in the game.
Finch, Australia’s current limited-overs captain, has played over 300 T20 matches and amassed a massive total of 9718 runs at an average of 34.58.
Finch, on the other hand, has struggled in the IPL.
The right-hander has played for Royal Challengers Bangalore, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Pune Warriors, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Gujarat Lions in the Indian Premier League.
He was released by RCB recently and was not selected at the auction.
Finch averages 25.71 in 87 games in the cash-rich league, but it’s his strike rate of 127.71 that’s startling.
Colin Ingram
Another cricketer who has hacked T20 cricket around the world is Colin Ingram.
He has played in almost 250 games, averaging 29.54 runs per game with a strike rate of 138.91 with 4 hundreds and 41 half-centuries.
The left-hander, though, failed to impress in the IPL.
He has played for Delhi in two seasons, 2011 and 2019, averaging 17.08 in 15 matches, striking a meagre 113.89, and with the highest score of 47.
The 35-year-old batter is still a capable T20 batsman, but not in the IPL.
Riley Rossouw
Apart from the main leagues, the left-handed batter has appeared in practically every major league, including the Bangladesh Premier League and the Mzansi Super League.
Rossouw has participated in 214 T20 matches, accumulating 5156 runs at an average of 28.96 and hitting at 135.97, with a handful of hundreds, since his 51st international game in 2016.
However, during his time with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL in 2014 and 2015, the left-hander could only generate 53 runs at just 10.60 with a strike rate of 103.92.
