IOA cancels Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Singh Chautala's life presidents appointment
New Delhi : After the outrage, the Indian Olympic Association has cancelled the appointments of tainted politicians Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Singh Chautala as life presidents.
Post appointment, the Sports Ministry had suspended the IOA’s recognition, until the body reverses its decision to appoint Kalmadi and Chautala as life presidents.
The Sports Ministry has welcomed the move and said the move will help the sports to have a clean image in the future.
Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel, said that he was happy that the IOA had cancelled the appointments and that the decision augured well for the governance of sports in the country.
He also said, "By reversing their earlier decision, which appears to have been taken in a hurried manner, IOA has complied with its own constitutional obligation and also with conditionality approved by International Olympic Committee (IOC). In the renewed circumstances, we look forward to partnering with IOA in making India a sporting nation."
Earlier, the appointments had led to major controversy with the Sports Ministry warning that it will sever ties with the association unless they are removed.
The Vijay Goel-headed Sports Ministry had issued a show-cause notice to the IOA after a General Body Meeting of the body passed a resolution to appoint Kalmadi and Chautala, both of whom have been charge-sheeted in corruption and other cases, as its life presidents.
