Google blocks Tik Tok app in India after court's order

New Delhi : Google has blocked the Chinese application Tik Tok in India after a court ordered to stop its downloads, a person with direct knowledge told news agency Reuters on Tuesday.

The decision came after a court in southern Tamil Nadu state refused to entertain the request by China’s Bytedance Technology to upheld the ban on Tik Tok app.

In its order on April 3, the state court had asked the federal government to ban the TikTok application in India as it promotes pornography and make child users vulnerable to sexual predators.

The ruling came on a PIL filed by an individual calling for its ban.

The federal government had sent a letter to Apple and Google to abide by the state court’s order, according to an IT ministry official.

While we checked, the application was available of apple store till Tuesday evening, but Google has removed it from the play store.

Google said in a statement it does not comment on individual apps but adheres to local laws. Apple did not respond to requests for comment, while TikTok did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Google’s move.
