Delhi : Popular social media sites are losing popularity as the global user base of social media continues to grow—it was recently estimated to be approximately 4.8 billion. According to reports, users spend almost two hours and twenty-four minutes a day on six to seven different platforms on average.

Even though millions of people rely on social media programmes in their everyday lives, their popularity might quickly decline. The US-based software company TRG Datacentres released a research claiming that since its July 2023 debut, Meta's Threads app—which amassed 100 million users in only five days—has had an 80% decline in daily active users. The organisation conducted a study on well-liked applications that lost popularity this year because, according to the research, several social networking apps had difficulty remaining relevant throughout the year.

Globally, people choose to delete Instagram this year over other social networking applications, according to the report. As to the research, people were most willing to remove Instagram from their accounts. In 2023, there will be more than a million searches for "how to delete (my) Instagram account" globally per month. This equates to more than 12,500 searches for every 100,000 individuals worldwide.

According to Chris Hinkle, Chief Technical Officer of TRG Datacenters, Instagram's ranking as the most deleted app in 2023 reflects a changing trend in social media preferences. It indicates a requirement for platforms that resonate more genuinely and meet changing demands by demonstrating a dynamic movement in user priorities.

How did they do their research?

According to Statista.com, the researchers used the nine most prominent social networks in the globe. These were the applications that were available in a variety of nations. Later, they looked at how many times the phrase 'how to delete (my) account' was searched every month on average over the course of a year. This was done in addition to the amount of users that used each app. The researchers then utilised the worldwide population to calculate the number of persons looking for the specific phrases per 100,000 people each month.

According to the study, 10,20,000 individuals planned to remove Instagram in 2023; 1,28,500 planned to delete Snapchat, 12,300 planned to delete Twitter, 71,700 planned to delete Telegram, 49,000 planned to delete Facebook, 24,900 planned to delete Tiktok, 12,500 planned to delete YouTube, 4,950 planned to delete WhatsApp, and 2,090 planned to delete WeChat.

Instagram, Meta's photo-sharing software, was at the top of its game for years. However, the researchers believe that changes over time, an invasion of adverts, and influencers using it to promote goods may have discouraged users from using the app. It should be remembered that the site still has over 2 billion users globally. The experts believe that if a million individuals continue to look forward to uninstalling the app each month, the popular app will be doomed in the future. When Snapchat was began in 2011, over 1,30,000 individuals attempted to deactivate it each month. The site, which is popular with Generation Z, has over 750 million members globally.
