Delhi : UPI is the standard for online financial transactions these days. We use UPI to make payments for anything from veggies to cars. However, your UPI ID can soon be closed. In this regard, all banks and third-party applications have received instructions from National Payments Corporation (NPCI).

Instruction from National Payments Corporation (NPCI):

UPI IDs that are inactive for a year—that is, IDs with no transactions for a year—must be closed, per NPCI directive. Additionally, December 31, 2023 has been set as the deadline for this. All of these IDs will thereafter be closed.

If a person hasn't used their UPI ID for a transaction for a year, their bank or a third-party app (such as Google Pay, Phone Pe, etc.) will send them an email or text message.

How can your UPI ID remain active?

It takes very little for an individual to maintain their UPI ID active. To use the UPI ID, he or she simply needs to complete one transaction by December 31, 2023. The UPI ID won't be closed after this. A smartphone number is frequently used by users to generate a UPI ID. After then, they neglect to deactivate the UPI ID linked to that phone when they change their mobile number.

The previous number gets transferred to a new owner when it is closed. There's also a chance that this individual will receive the UPI ID associated with it. It has been decided to close the closed UPI IDs for this reason.
