Assam : 10 people have lost their lives and over 80 went missing, including 22 Army personnel, after a cloudburst over the Lhonak Lake in north Sikkim caused flash floods. According to a report, 14 bridges have been collapsed and more than 3000 tourists are stranded in the region.

In the early hours of Wednesday, a cloudburst occurred, leading to the overflow of water that carried away sections of a dam located in Chungthang, the largest hydropower project in the state. This event exacerbated the flooding downstream. The Sikkim government has officially declared this incident a disaster according to the Disaster Management Act.

On Wednesday evening, Army gave a heartbreaking update of 23 soldiers missing during the flash floods. However, one soldier has been rescued and is under the stable condition

According to an update from an official of Assam government, 10 people have lost their lives and more than 82 people have been missing in the region.

According to the official, a total of 14 bridges have been significantly damaged and have collapsed, with nine of them managed by the Border Roads Organisation and the remaining five under the jurisdiction of the State government. There is concern that more than 3,000 tourists may be trapped or unable to leave the affected areas.

Additionally, approximately 14 workers who were employed at the Teesta Stage 3 dam in Chungthang, which had sections washed away, remain stuck in the tunnels.
