Donald Trump becomes first president to be impeached twice in history

Washington : Donald Trump became the first president in the history to be impeached twice, after the House of Representatives voted against him for allegedly inciting US Capitol violence last week. Now, Donald Trump faces a trial in the Senate.

According to Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, the trial is unlikely to be held before January 20, the inauguration of incoming president Joe Biden.

Congress voted 232 to 197 on single article of impeachment that alleged Donald Trump of provoking the unrest.

McConnell in a statement released after the vote said that even if the Senate convened this week, “no final verdict would be reached until after President Trump had left office”.

A total of 10 Republicans broke ranks with the GOP to join their Democrat colleagues to vote in the impeachment resolution, in contrast to the year 2020, when not a single Republican voted for Trump’s impeachment.

The 10 GOP members include Dan Newhouse of Washington, John Katko of New York, Jaime Herrera Beutler of Washington, Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, Fred Upton of Michigan, Liz Cheney of Wyoming, Peter Meijer of Michigan, Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, Tom Rice of South Carolina, David Valadao of California, CNN reported.

On January 6, Donald Trump has given a speech to his supporters and said that they will walk upto US Capitol to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women. Soon after the speech, his supporters were seen conducting a mob attack on the US Capitol, resulting in death of five people.

Since then, the outgoing president has been blocked from all major social media platforms.
