Los Angeles : President-elect Donald Trump was on Wednesday named Time magazine Person of the Year for his shocking upset election victory in US elections.

The shocking victory that rewrote the rules of politics contributed to his win at the prestigious magazine.

Magazine’s managing editor Nancy Gibbs said, "When have we ever seen a single individual who has so defied expectations, broken the rules, violated norms, beaten not one but two political parties on the way to winning an election that he entered with 100-to-1 odds against him?"

Thanking Time for the decision, Trump in a phone interview welcomed the move as "a very, very great honour. It means a lot."

Gibbs added that Hillary Clinton, was the No 2 finalist but the choice of Trump was "straightforward" this year.

She added that “The Hackers," ranked after Clinton as they are "a new cyber security threat we saw this year of state-sponsored hackers looking to delegitimize an American election. This was something new this year and something very disturbing."

Among the other finalists who he beat were German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Meanwhile, our very own Prime Minister Narendra Modi was named the Person of the Year in the popular category.
